Turn These Things On During A Home Inspection

Byron Gutierrez

One of the reasons that it's important for you to attend the home inspection of a residence that you're thinking about buying is that you can chip in. While your inspector will be busy focusing on the larger issues that the home might have, you can play an important role by keeping your eyes open for any smaller problems. One way that you can do so is to turn on a number of different things while you're inside the house — just remember to turn them off once you've adequately assessed them. Here's a list of some things that are important to turn on.

Every Light Switch

Each time that you enter a room in the house, look for any light switches that are present and turn them on. Faulty switches can be frustrating and time consuming to fix after you buy a house, so you want to be sure that everything is in proper working order during the home inspection. Don't forget to assess switches that are connected to exterior lights and ceiling fans, too.

Appliances

If the house is being sold with its appliances, you should turn on as many of them as you're able. The fridge will, of course, be running, but you should turn on each burner on the stove and check that they all get warm. Similarly, flipping on the oven can be a good idea — just be sure that the homeowner hasn't stored anything inside the oven. You can't reasonably run the washing machine, but you can turn on the clothes dryer to ensure that it gets hot and runs smoothly.

Taps

You should always turn on every tap in the house. This includes the sinks in the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry room, as well as the tubs and showers. You're looking to check how the water pressure seems, as well as if the water looks rusty or the pipes rattle as the water flows.

Heating/Air Conditioning

Regardless of the season, you should make a point of turning on the heating and the air conditioning during the home inspection. Turn on one immediately upon arriving, as it can take a few minutes for you to tell how it's running. Once you're satisfied that it's working correctly, turn on the other. The last thing you want is to buy a home that needs to have its furnace or central air conditioning serviced or replaced in the near future.
