Hiring a Roofing Contractor for a Large Backyard Shed

Byron Gutierrez

If you've recently constructed (or are planning to construct) a large backyard shed, you know that a shed needs a roof just like a home does. Large, wooden sheds are essentially miniature homes, and traditional asphalt shingles are usually used to waterproof them. If you don't want to have to climb up there and to the roof yourself, it's time to hire a roofing contractor.

Your Shed Roof Matters

The roof of your shed is what protects it from moisture every time it rains. If you're using your shed for storage, this is important. Without the right roofing, your shed is going to leak, and any equipment inside of your shed will be exposed to moisture. Sheds are designed assuming that the roof will be completed correctly. It may experience structural damage if there are serious roof leaks.

Shed Roofs and Home Roofs are Functionally Identical

Even though it's "just a shed," it's very likely that its asphalt roof will be almost identical to any other roof. A roofing contractor will be able to complete this work quickly and safely. A homeowner attempting to DIY their shed may make mistakes or could end up getting hurt, as the roof does need to be installed at a height.

You Can Decide on Different Types

While most sheds are made for a specific type of roof, you can decide on different types — provided that you keep it light. Asphalt shingles and wood shingles (such as cedar shingles) are both excellent options. Options such as ceramic tile are usually not possible, because they are heavy and require reinforcement.

Both asphalt shingles and wood shingles are durable and affordable options, but asphalt things will have a more "home" look while wood shingles will have a more "rustic" look. Wood shingles are naturally pest-resistant, but they do need additional maintenance.

Get Quotes Based on Square Footage

To get quotes from your contractors, you'll need to know the square footage of your shed's roof. You can usually look this up in your shed's specifications. Most quotes are going to be based on the size of the shed and the type of roof you want.

A roofing contractor can help install a roof on your shed. Since there isn't an old roof to remove, the process should be fairly fast. This is especially true if your shed doesn't have significant height. You can start getting quotes today.
