Looking Forward to Summer? How to Get Your Septic System Ready for Seasonal Changes

Byron Gutierrez

Summer will be here in a few weeks. With that in mind, now's the time to prepare your septic tank. You want your septic system to be in good shape when summer arrives. That way, you can avoid problems that can interrupt your fun. Here are some maintenance tips that will help get your septic system ready for summer.

Start With an Empty Tank

If you're like most people, you use your septic tank more during the summer months. That happens because more people are home for vacation. That includes the kids that are home from school. But, things are different with the current stay-at-home orders. You and your family may have already been at home for several months once summer hits. If that's the case, it's a good idea to have your septic tank cleaned before summer arrives. That way, you have plenty of room in your tank for all the extra water you and your family will be using during the summer.

Schedule a Drain Inspection

If it's been a few years since you had your septic system inspected, this would be a good time to take care of that. Some companies, such as LP Murray, know that this is especially important if you haven't had your drains inspected. The extra use over the past few months may have left your drains coated in extra grease, hair, and human waste. Unfortunately, that can set you up for septic and drain problems come summer. Avoid the risk. Have your drains inspected before summer arrives.

Plan Your Outdoor Water Fun

If you're like most people, you're looking forward to some outdoor fun this summer. If that's the case, plan for your outdoor activities. Your septic system will need some extra care, especially if you plan to set up an above-ground pool. You might not realize this, but above-ground pools can destroy your septic system. In fact, the extra weight can cause your septic tank and seepage field to collapse under the pressure. Protect your septic system, mark your septic field before you install your above-ground pool this summer. If you're not sure about the location of your septic system, contact your septic service provider. They'll come out and mark the area for you.

Prepare for Summer Downpours

If you haven't redirected your gutters yet, it's a good idea to take care of that before the summer rains arrive. Rain is great for your plants and grass. But, it can wreak havoc on your septic system, especially if you haven't made some adjustments. Excess water soaks into the soil, saturating your septic field. Test your gutters to make sure that the downspouts point away from your septic field. You can do that with a garden hose. Place your garden hose in your gutters and watch where the water pools. If the water pools anywhere near your septic field, redirect the downspouts.
